Reed graduated from James Madison High School in Vienna in 1974 and James Madison University in 1978. After high school, he pursued a career in baseball having a private workout with Texas Rangers in 1974 but opted to go to college instead. He holds two bachelor’s degrees one in communications from JMU and a combined degree in Meteorology from Penn State, Ball State, Mississippi State, Portland State, Lyndon State, and the USDA Graduate School.
Reed is considered to be one of the most sought-after speakers in Southwest Virginia and an advocate of math and science education. In September 1976 he joined WMRA FM where he worked as a music director until May 1978. He then moved to WHSV TV working as a sports director from December 1978 to March 1982.
Reed then proceeded and joined WDBJ as chief meteorologist in March 1982 where he supervised 4 person weather department using the latest HD technology from the weather company. Duties included on-air and IT responsibilities, he also provided weather forecasts for 30 + radio stations in Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and the New River Valley. He then served as a 6 pm News Anchor and meteorologist from February 2017 up to December 2022 where he retired from WDBJ.
