Melissa Russo Biography
Melissa Russo is an American Award-Winning Reporter working as a Political and Government Affairs Reporter and a member of the NBC 4 I-Team. She is an expert in local policy and politics, whom people can rely on for accurate and precise information. Russo has been part of the NBC 4 New York team since September 1998 and initially served as the station’s co-anchor of the 6 pm and 11 pm Saturday Newscasts.
Education | Career
Russo attended and graduated from The Dalton School in 1986 and later joined Tufts University where she graduated with a bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in 1990. She interned for The New York Times editorial board and later served on the Op-Ed page as a writer. Before joining NBC 4 New York, she served as a political reporter for NY1 News and was the host of Inside City Hall.

In September 1998, she joined NBC 4 New York as a co-anchor of the station’s 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts. She was later promoted to her current role of Political and Government Affairs Reporter. Over the years she has served the New York folk delivering 1st hand information and ensuring they stay informed on political affairs.
Besides politics, she also covers other stories like the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the Emergence of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. Melissa’s reporting on this issue also played a part in the station’s January 2021 win of the honorable Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award.
A Russo-led investigation during the pandemic found that AABR, a non-profit that serves approximately 200 adults with disabilities, did not have enough necessary masks and gowns to safely retrieve 12 hospitalized autistic and developmentally disabled residents treated for coronavirus.
After the story aired, Governor Cuomo’s office recognized her reporting and facilitated the delivery of hundreds of gowns, gloves, and masks to the group homes that weekend. Additionally, her story generated $20,000 in donations in support of the program.
Over the years of her career, Russo has closely covered four New York City mayors. She has also covered dozens of local and national elections and moderates numerous live prime-time televised debates in local races for mayor and Governor. Besides her professional career, she is also actively involved in the community and regularly assists nonprofits with charity events.
