Joe Dashiell is an American Award-winning Journalist working at WDBJ7 News serving as a Senior Reporter since he joined the station in 1990. He began working at WDBJ7 in Lynchburg in the fall of 1980 and has since managed three bureaus.
Education | Career
Dashiell received his journalism degree from Washington & Lee University in 1980. He is currently playing his role as a Senior Reporter at WDBJ7 News station since late 1990. Dashiell began working at WDBJ7 in Lynchburg in the fall of 1980 and has since managed three bureaus. He participated in the 1982 launch of the New River newsroom. Three years later, he relocated to Richmond to cover state politics, the governor’s office, and the Virginia General Assembly.
He was chosen to serve as president of the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association during his five years in Richmond. Even though Joe moved back to Roanoke as a Senior Reporter in late 1990, he continues to go frequently to Richmond to cover events of statewide importance, including the General Assembly.
The Virginia Association of Broadcasters presented Joe with the George A. Bowles Jr. Award for Distinguished Performance in Broadcast News in 2009. 2011 saw Joe accept the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service in Media Award from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s Roanoke Chapter. Additionally, he received recognition in 2012 at the NAACP’s annual Citizen of the Year Awards from the Roanoke Branch.
Furthermore, in the year 2010 Dashiell won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for his series Headlines in Hard Times; in 2014, he won a regional Emmy for Virginia Roots & Tennessee Dreams: The Legacy of Patsy Cline; and in 2016, he won a regional Emmy for a series on the 30th anniversary of the Flood of ’85. Dashiell has also received statewide and regional honors for his reporting.
In 2016, Joe received the inaugural Adam & Alison Award for Media Excellence from the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. In 2019, Joe received The Associated Press Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award, and he was inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. A fan of old-time and bluegrass music, Joe plays the banjo. Among his favorite productions is an hour-long program on the 60th anniversary of the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax.
