Bennett Haeberle is an American Award Winning Anchor and Reporter working as an Investigative Reporter for NBC 5 Chicago. He joined the station in May 2023 after working as a Chief Investigative Reporter at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio.
Education | Career
Haeberle attended and graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and History in 2003. He began his professional career as a Reporter and Photographer at WTVQ in Lexington, Kentucky. During his stay there he had the opportunity to interview the family members of the commercial jet crash that killed 49 people. This story later earned a National R. Murrow award.
Haeberle currently works as an Investigative reporter at NBC 5 Chicago. He has been part of the station since May 2023 and seems to enjoy his stay there. Since joining NBC 5 he is most proud of his stories that have been credited with effecting change. His years’ worth of reporting on the abuse of Ohio children in congregate care facilities led to increased inspections. Later on, his reporting led to the closure of one troubled facility.
Before joining his current station, he served as a Chief Investigative Reporter at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio. Before that, Bennett was an investigative reporter and fill-in anchor at WISH-TV in Indianapolis. Haeberle also spent 10 years reporting and anchoring the news in his home state of Kentucky, working at both WDRB-TV in Louisville and WTVQ-TV in Lexington.
His reporting on failures within the Ohio parole system helped expose how the state failed to track ex-prisoners even while they were wearing GPS monitors adequately. The reporting by Bennett and his colleagues led to a governor’s task force being formed to investigate the inadequacies. State lawmakers also changed state law to create tougher sentencing guidelines for people convicted of violent crimes.

He has received numerous awards and recognitions over the years of his professional career. He has been honored with two National Headliner Awards, several regional Emmys, and a regional Edward R. Murrow award. Additionally, he was part of a news team honored with a National Edward R. Murrow for spot news for reporting on a commercial plane crash. When free he loves spending time with his family and friends. He also loves swimming and cycling.
