Art Norman Biography
Art Norman is an American Emmy Award-Winning Anchor and Reporter working as a part-time special contributor and co-host of Tech Trends at NBC 5 Chicago. He also hosts “Making a Difference” a segment on NBC 5 airing at 5 pm.
Education | Career
Norman attended and graduated from Johnson C.Smith University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Math and Physics. While in college he was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Besides his degree in Math and Physics, Norman also holds a first-class F.C.C. engineer’s license. He began his broadcasting in 1969 as a TV engineer at WCCB in Charlotte.
Norman currently serves as a part-time special contributor and co-host of Tech Trends at NBC 5 Chicago. He also hosts a segment titled “Making a Difference” that airs on NBC 5 at 5 p.m. Additionally, Norman serves the station as a regular ambassador where he appears on numerous community occasions. The National Association of Black Journalists gave him the Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
Norman initially joined NBC 5 Chicago in July 1982, as a general assignment reporter. Before joining his current station, he served as a weekend anchor and reporter at WMAR in Baltimore from 1979 to 1982. He also worked as a reporter at WPCQ and WSOC in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Besides his professional work, Norman is extensively involved in the community and lends a helping hand whenever he can. Norman has hosted numerous community occasions yearly. He serves the United Negro College Fund as a spokesman and an on-air host of their telethon.

Awards and Recognitions
Over the years of his professional career, Norman has received numerous awards and recognitions. Recently, he received an Emmy Award for contributing to NBC 5’s broadcast of the Chicago Auto Show special. Additionally, he received an Emmy for broadcasting the Fox River Grove bus collision.
Norman did a series called “Cops and Robbers,” which exposed secret files of police officers with criminal records and won a national Investigative Reporters, Editors Award for it. He won a Chicago Emmy Award for contributing to NBC Chicago’s broadcast of the Laurie Dann story in 1989.
After the 1986 Beirut hostage situation Norman won an Emmy Award for his reports on this situation. During the incident, he provided extensive reports on the future of Geneva and St. Charles locals held hostage by terrorists. The Religious Public Relations Council granted him a Wilbur Award in 1987.
In 1984, Norman received an International Radio and Television News Directors Award for providing live broadcasts of the shooting of a divorce court judge and an attorney in a Daley Center courtroom. In 1987, Norman won a National Association of Educators’ School Bell Award. Additionally, Norman won North Carolina’s RTNDA Award for broadcasting a deadly air balloon wreck.
