Gilma Avalos Biography
Gilma Avalos is an American Anchor working as an 11 am and 5 pm weekday anchor for NBC 4 New York since joining the station in 2019. Her work has played a significant role in NBC4’s popularity. Her COVID-19 coverage was a key component of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning coverage in January 2021.
Education | Career
Avalos started television at 12 when she hosted “Paleokids,” a Spanish language children’s program focusing on the world of dinosaurs for Discovery Channel Latin America. Later on, Avalos attended and graduated from Columbia University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Hispanic Studies. While there she interned for NBC News Partnerships at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
After graduating, Avalos started her professional career at News 12 The Bronx, where she worked as an anchor. She had the opportunity to anchor continuous coverage of Hurricane Irene in 2011. Additionally, she helped develop the pilot that would later become News 12 en Español.
Before joining KTVT, Avalos worked as a multimedia journalist and general assignment reporter at WTVJ-TV in Miami. While there she was one of the reporters to cover Trayvon Martin’s shooting death. She now works as a Weekday 11 am and 5 pm news anchor since joining the station in 2019. She has covered many of the Tri-State’s biggest stories since joining WNBC in 2019, including the COVID-19 outbreak.
After five years at KTVT, Alvos joined NBC’s flagship station, where she anchored weekday afternoon newscasts and delivered breaking news coverage. In 2016, Avalos was on the scene of the deadly ambush of five Dallas police officers. She was also one of the first to report on the police robot that helped bring down the suspect.
Gilma also covered the Amber Guyger trial and anchored continuous coverage of the verdict and sentencing. In January 2021, her reporting was a key component of NBC 4 New York’s award-winning COVID-19 coverage. When off her duties she loves spending time exploring the area.
