Irv Gikofsky Biography

Irv Gikofsky professionally known as Mr. G is an American Emmy Award Winning Meteorologist working as a weatherman for PIX11 (WPIX) in New York. He comes to WPIX from CBS where he worked as a morning weatherman from 1977 to 2014.

Education

Gikofsky is a 1967 graduate of Hofstra University where he attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He then attended Yeshiva University where he received a Master of Arts Degree in Secondary Education and pursued doctoral studies. After graduating, he started his career as a school teacher at Albert Einstein Intermediate School in the Bronx.

Career

During his stint at Albert Einstein Intermediate School, Gikofsky was recognized for creating the first computerized weather program for use by the New York City School System. In 1977, he was hired as a weatherman at CBS New York where he served for a while before leaving in 2014.

In 1993, Gikofsky became the nightly weeknight weatherman at WPIX11 and has since served this role at the station. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work as a meteorologist over the years including five Emmy Awards and an Edward R.Murrow Award. Gikofsky was awarded the Friar’s Club Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

In addition to his work as a television weather personality, Gikofsky has given motivational speeches at over 500 schools across New York. In honor of his work in the community and his famous media presence Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. proclaimed January 28 to be “Mr. G Day” On January 28, 2016.

Additionally, Gikofsky serves as a board member for the R Baby Foundation, which works to improve pediatric care in emergency rooms in the New York metropolitan area. The New York State Broadcasters Association, Inc., announced on August 1, 2023, that Irv would be inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame. On October 26, 2023, The induction ceremony took place at the group’s annual luncheon in the Rainbow Room, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.
