Michael Gargiulo Biography

Michael Gargiulo is an American Emmy Award-Winning Anchor and Reporter working as an anchor of Today in New York on NBC 4 New York. He has been part of the station since July 2006 and he was promoted to his current role in May 2008.

Education | Career

Gargiulo attended and graduated from Xavier High School before joining New York University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in history and studied Italian, French, Russian, and German. Michael started his career in 1984 as a host of the local edition of the syndicated show PM Magazine on WSAZ. Later on, he worked as a reporter and anchor at WYOU, the CBS affiliate in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a reporter and anchor for WLKY in Louisville, Kentucky.

His next stop was Minneapolis where he served as a reporter and anchor for KSTP-TV. He then served as a Washington DC Correspondent for Hearst-Argyle Television. Before joining his current station he worked as a morning anchor for WTTG in Washington from 2000 to 2006.

Career at NBC 4 New York

Gargiulo currently works as an anchor of Today in New York with Darelene Rodrigues on WNBC (NBC 4 New York). He joined the station in July 2006 and was named anchor of the 5:30 pm newscasts in October 2007.

Gargiulo hosted the 5:30 pm newscasts beside Sue Simmons and later in May 2008, he replaced Rob Morrison as co-anchor of Today in New York. He has also co-hosted the Nonstop Rundown with Erika Tarantal and Tracie Strahan. As an anchor at NBC 4 New York, he has led coverage of many major news events, including Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the US.

Michael has also covered the commissioning of the USS New York, President Barack Obama’s visit to Ground Zero, Hurricane Irene and Sandy, and the death of Mayor Ed Koch. Additionally, he traveled to eastern Afghanistan to cover the last deployment of a unit of the United States Army’s 10th Mountain Division.

Gargiulo is a hardworking journalist and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. He has received numerous awards and recognitions over the years of his professional career. He won an Emmy Award for breaking news coverage in 2009 after covering the crane collapse on the Upper East Side.

Together with Erika Tarantal, they won an Emmy in 2010 for best morning newscasts for Today in New York. In 2013, Michael won another breaking news Emmy and in 204 he was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Regional News Story.
