Wells enrolled in Radford University from the year 1993 to 1995, and he managed to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Media Studies. He was the sports director at WDBJ, the CBS affiliate in Roanoke, Virginia, and held that spot since 2008. Wells spent 20 years at WDBJ before he worked for TV stations in Charlottesville, Bristol, and Roanokes WDBJ, where he began as an intern in 1995.
Travis currently works as an assistant athletics director for strategic communications for Virginia Tech. He joined Virginia Tech Football in 2022 and serves as the primary communications contact although he has many other duties.
Before Wells graduated from Radford in 1995, he had already spent time working for WDBJ as an intern for Mike Stevens. His time as an intern allowed him to build a working relationship with Stevens and Mason as well as work on his craft.
Due to Wells’s internship, Mason decided to give Wells a call about a part-time news photographer position that needed to be filled. After one year at that position, Wells was able to move on to a full-time position with benefits in news photography at WDBJS Lynchburg Bureau. Wells worked for an NBC affiliate station, WVIR, working as a weekend sports reporter and anchor for three years.
During his time at WDBJ, Wells helped produce Virginia Tech Sports Today for 10 years in conjunction with Learfield, the university’s media rights partner. Wells spearheaded the station’s coverage of ACC football and basketball and anchored the WDBJ high school football program for nearly 15 years. Wells was named Virginia Sportscaster of the Year in 2015 and 2016 by the National Sports Media Association.
