Bill Ritter Biography
Bill Ritter is an American journalist working as an Anchor for WABC-TV in New York City, he joined the station in June 1998. He first served on weekends but later succeeded Bill Beutel anchoring the 11 p.m. news. In addition, Bill serves on the ABC News program 20/20 as a correspondent.
Education
Ritter went to San Diego State University in 1968 but did not graduate, he was thrown out of school for demonstrating against the Vietnam War in 1972. He then decided to go back to college 40 years later and graduated from The New School in May 2016.
Career
Ritter currently works at WABC-TV in New York City where he serves as an Anchor. He joined the station in 1992 when he first served as the founding co-host of “Good Morning America/Sunday.” During his time at the station, Ritter has been able to cover the big and important events for both Eyewitness News and ABC News.
Bill started his broadcasting career at KNSD-TV (NBC affiliate) in San Diego as a business and then investigative reporter between February 1987 and January 1990. Bill also worked for Fox Television Network where he served as a reporter for the Rodney King trial and the subsequent Los Angeles riots. As a reporter, he also worked for the Fox Network’s nationally syndicated show Entertainment Daily Journal (E.D.J.) He also served for the station’s Gulf War coverage as an Anchor, he was still based in Los Angeles.
Ritter started his print career in 1972 in print journalism. He worked as a reporter before moving to be a business editor of the San Diego County edition of The Los Angeles Times. Further, he joined the San Diego Business Journal and worked there as a reporter and editor until January 1984.
On the other hand, Bill worked at Crash, Inc., a non-profit drug education and prevention organization first as a board member and then as chairman. In addition, he served on the advisory board of San Diego State University Business School between 1984 and 1985.
The other station where Bill has set foot is KTTV as an investigative reporter. He also worked for KCAL-TV, the former Disney-owned independent station in Los Angeles. He had an “Up Front” segment which took to the headlines of the station during the 9 p.m. weeknight news broadcast, it showcased his perspective of the day’s top national or international story.

Ritter has reported for 20/20 bringing stories that run the gamut, some are light-hearted, others heart-warming yet others are deadly serious. It is he who investigated the claims of James Van Praagh suspected of being a psychic saying he could talk to the dead. Bill also covered the Columbine shootings and also investigated the phenomenon of patients waking up during surgery among many other major stories. 20/20 is a segment that features in-depth stories and focuses more on human interest stories instead of political subjects and international.

Ritter is a native of Los Angeles, his late father Irl Ritter died in 1998 at the age of 81. Her mum Darlene Ritter is also late, she passed on in 1989 at the age of 61. Ritter has one brother called Bruce who was hospitalized in 2018 and was only talking through some devices.

Their daughters are the ones who encouraged Bill to go back to the university to complete his degree at San Diego State University 40 years later. He had been expelled in 1972 one semester short of graduating for having protested the Vietnam War, he then graduated with his degree on May 20, 2016, from The New School.
