Wankum attended and graduated from Briar Cliff University with a Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology. He then attended Creighton University where he attained his Masters in Atmospheric Science. Mike is also a member of the AMS and holds a Certified Broadcast Meteorology designation.
Wankum currently works as a Weekday Evening Meteorologist at WCVB in Boston since joining the station in December 2006. He has been here for more than 3 decades forecasting the area’s weather. Before joining his current station, he worked as a chief meteorologist at WLVI in Boston. He also served as a chief meteorologist at WTRV in Richmond, Virginia, and KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa.
Over the years of his professional career, Mike has received numerous awards and recognitions including 17 regional NATAS Boston Emmy Awards. Additionally, he has been recognized with numerous Associated Press and Massachusetts Broadcasters Association Awards including a First Place MBA Sound Bites award for his weekly “Cutting Edge” series in 2018.
Besides his professional work, he is also active in the community and frequently visits schools and universities to offer science lectures. Back then, he served as Chairman of the Chornobyl Children Project USA, and as of 2024, he is involved with many charitable organizations in Boston. Mike is a motorcycle enthusiast and is a licensed mature road racer.
