Dana Tyler Biography

Dana Tyler is an American Multiple Emmy Award-winning journalist working at WCBS, CBS News New York affiliate, serving as an anchor. She became part of the network in 1990, working as a weekend anchor and General Assignment Reporter. Formerly, Tyler worked at WBNS-TV as a reporter.

Education

Tyler was awarded an Alumni Award for Distinguished Service by her alma institution, Boston University, in 2001 and an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from St. John’s University in 2003. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus in marketing and broadcast journalism from BU’s School of Management.

Career

Dana is presently working at WCBS News which is an affiliate of CBS News, New York, serving as an anchor. She first joined the station in the year 1990 performing her duties as a weekend anchor and a general assignment reporter before her current role.

At six o’clock in the evening, Dana leads CBS News and delivers interviews and long-form stories to the station’s various media outlets. She presents news programs, such as CBS2’s “Black History is American History” and “CBS2 at the Tonys,” which previews Broadway’s Tony Awards and unique coverage of breaking news events. In the top media market in the country, she and Reggie Harris were the first African American anchor tandem.

Tyler worked as a weekend producer at WBZ Radio and as an intern at CBS Radio WEEI-AM in Boston. In Columbus, Ohio, she began her career as an intern at WCOL Radio and WBNS-TV. She was a reporter and anchor there for nine years, winning the 1986–1987 NATAS Columbus Dayton Cincinnati Chapter Emmy Award for On-Air Host: “Co-Host Composite.”

In recognition of her 32 years of award-winning work, Dana joined the New York State Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame Class of 2022. Her 25+ years at WCBS-TV earned her an induction into the 2017 Gold & Silver Circle by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences New York Chapter.

Dana had a key role in CBS2’s 2021 “Breaking the Stigma” reports, which explored the taboo topics of suicide and mental health. In a lengthy chat with Dana, CBS2 anchor Cindy Hsu, courageously discussed her attempt at suicide and her subsequent recovery. Their openness exposed a never-before-seen TV news experience that might have prevented fatalities.

Awards

As the anchor of the 2009 Breaking News Story, “Flight 1549 Lands in the Hudson River,” and the 2011 Community Service Program, “Tunnel to Towers Memorial Run,” Dana was honored with two Emmy Awards. For the 2003 Outstanding Health Program Feature, “Race for the Cure, Heather and Stacy’s Story,” she received an Emmy for her work. As an anchor of the “New York City Blackout” breaking news story in 2003, “CBS2 News at 11: City Hall Shooting” outstanding single newscast in 2003, and “New York City Subway Firebombing” outstanding single newscast in 1994, Tyler was awarded Emmys.

Among her many nominations for an Emmy Award are: Best Hard News Single Story of 2011: “Spider-Man’s Fall,” “Race for the Cure, Amy’s Story,” an Outstanding Health Program Feature for 2008. The 1994 Hard News Story of the Year, “Mole People,” The World Trade Center bombing was an instantaneous breaking news story in 1993, while “Heroes on Parade” was an outstanding news special in 1991.

Tyler was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Association of Black Journalists in 2014 and a NYABJ Award in 2006 for her Broadway article on “The Color Purple.” Her honors were from the Friars Club’s 2011 “Salute to News Veterans” and McDonald’s 2007 “Salute to Black Broadcast Legends.”

Charity Work

Tyler has volunteered for numerous non-profit organizations over the years, in addition to WCBS-TV community partnerships. These include the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s “Out of the Darkness” Walk, food drives for the #BetterTogether “Season of Giving,” and assistance with “Project Green,” which aims to improve neighborhood environmental conditions.

She has participated in the Susan G. Komen Greater NYC luncheon “Sisters for the Cure,” the AIDS Walk New York and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to raise awareness of the high incidence of breast cancer among women of color. Dana volunteered in classrooms and on the board of Learning Leaders, a volunteer program run by the New York City Public Schools.

Parents | Family

 Tyler is the daughter of Waldo H. Tyler, a pharmacist in Columbus. Ralph Waldo Tyler, her great-grandfather, was a trailblazer. During World War I, the US government authorized him as the only African American war journalist to cover Black service members in France. Dana has however not shared any information regarding her mother or siblings.
